Besides the regularly minted denominations, the coinage of Zeeland in the beginning of the 1680’s, up until the middle of the following decade, shows an unusual amount and variety of experimental strikes. Between the many piedforts of virtually all denominations and gold off-metal strikes, the 30 Gulden pieces however stand out especially. While in terms of design and fabric they closely resemble the 10 Schellingen pieces struck en masse for circulation, the denomination is deliberately changed into quite possibly the highest denomination of any coin in the Provincial monetary system. This indicates that not only were they not just off-metal strikes, but that they actually were rather intended to have a place within circulation. Certainly not for everyday use, but rather as a trade coinage enabling large scale transactions. They were struck briefly between 1683 and 1687 (with most examples carrying the latter date), after which the experiment by mintmaster Hendrik van Dussldorp was forced to stop. The concept behind these high denominations seems to have met resistance from within the estates general and the few examples struck seem to have been trial or presentation pieces. Nowadays, only a handful of 30 Guldens are known to have survived, with the example on offer here without a doubt ranking amongst the finest. It posses remarkably well-preserved and crisp fields, while, due to the nature of the strike, the majority of other examples have seen excessive cleaning in their past. (ex collection Vinkenborg)
