# 4480
AE Follis (Carthage c. 308-310, 5.11 g) - IMP ALEXANDER PF AVG Laureate head right / GLORIA EXERCITVS KART Alexander radiate, raiding right and rising right hand (PK in ex.) (RIC 66) - VF, extremely rare, brown patina (ex Naville 9, 334 / ex H.J. Berk 165, 483). We know little about this usurper, who (as vicarius in Africa) revolted against Maxentius, in North Africa and Sardinia. Reason was that Maxentius ordered Alexander's son to be sent to Rome as a hostage, which Alexander refused. After that (in 308) he proclaimed himself emperor. We also know there is evidence for a pact between Alexander and Constantinus I to oppose Maxentius. A very rare coin, missing in most collections.
