Not only is the creation of wooden panels influenced by western ship carpentry, but the frontal image is also created as a western 'photograph', a frontal image as opposed to three-dimensional sculpture. A monumental Tsesah (Batcham) mask Cameroun. These Tsesah crests are believed to give expression to Bamileke sense of royal power. Worn atop the head or held by a dignitary in the fon's inner circle, the tsesah was a towering presence in performances that punctuated matters of state, from royal funerals and enthronement rites to the delivery of judicial sentences. By the time these works were collected by Westerners, they were no longer used in performances. H 170 Swiss collection

An monumental Baga Snake sculpture or Mantshol signifying "the master of medicine". The primary physical manifestation of a-Mant-Tshol is as this brilliantly coloured, larger-than-life aquatic serpent resembling a boa constrictor. The sinuous curves and undulating contours of the elegant sculptural representation evoke the power, elusive grace, and flexibility of this Baga spiritual entity. From base to summit, the broad vertical column rises, bends to one side, rises at an angle, and ascends again, culminating in a bold head, which features two round eyes. A chain of lozenges is incised and enhanced with applied colour up the length, the interstices in red and white pigments. A BaKota ‘mbulu ngulu’ reliquary basket with figure from Gabon. These were carved from wood and covered with brass plates or copper discs. The figures towered over each basket. The lower diamond shape reached into the vessel and was attached. The baskets were only brought out for important whole-village ceremonies. They were opened and their contents – the skulls of their ancestors – were presented, explained and ritually honoured. And so the venerated ancestors took part in the lives of their descendants. During the early twentieth century, Fang reliquary sculpture began to be acquired by collectors, who admired the inspired interpretation of the human form.
