Wreath and legend - gilt silver 43 mm 27,48 gram - XF - engraved CALLANTSOOG 5 OCTOBER 1895 - NB On October 5, 1895, a fin whale washed up on the beach of Callantsoog, near kilometerpaal 12. The skeleton was purchased for ƒ 300 by the directors of Artis for the collection. This medal must have been awarded to someone who cooperated in this transaction - possibly to the mayor of Callantsoog, who has been described as the original finder of the animal.
