Part of the Wamel coin find 1974 - This find has been described in detail by H.E. van Gelder in JMP 60/61 (1973/1974) on pages 173 to 185. Here is part of the text from this description:
The find is unique in composition for our country. It consists largely of French coins minted in the 12th and 13th centuries. Only 4 pieces were made outside what was then France, including the two youngest, a penny of Count John II of Holland (1299-1304) and one from Count Gerhard van Gulik (1297-1328). Because both of these are as good as new, while the other coins have all suffered wear and tear to a greater or lesser extent, the date of concealment can be put at shortly after 1300. The contents of the treasure can be broadly summarized as follows: Deniers parisis of the kings Louis VII and Philip II (nos 1-2) 6 Deniers tournois of kings Philip II, Louis IX, Philip III and IV (nos 3—9) 582 Doublé denier tournois of King Philip IV (no 10) 1 Deniers tournois of the Abbey of Saint Martin de Tours (no 11) 304 Deniers tournois of other monarchs (nos 12-16,18,19,27,28) 26 French deniers of other types (nos 17,20-26,29,30) 44 Non-French coins (nos 31-34) 4. Total 967 coins.
The above shows that not all coins can be attributed; 220 coins and coin fragments from this find are hereby offered. Reference is made to page and sequence numbers from the JMP.
