Sun and sunflower, in exergue 1636 - brass cast and gilt, fields polished, 50 mm 36,29 gram - XF, attractive - extremely rare - NB The Schenkenschans fortress was built by Captain Maarten Schenk van Nydeggen in 1584 at the junction of the Rhine and Waal rivers. This Kleve territory was previously occupied by Schenk for the Republic. The redoubt was called the 'Key of Holland' and 'Gate of Holland' because of its strategic location. On July 28, 1635, the Schenkenschans was captured by surprise at night by the Spanish army led by the Gelderland colonel Adolf van Eyndhouts.
