A lacquered copper medallion depicting Herman Boerhaave, decorated in gold hiramaki-e (low-relief lacquer) with details embellished with inlays of gold foil, inscribed above the bust 'Herman Boerhaave', the reverse with a French inscription in gold, Edo period, late 18th century -14,1 x 9 cm, light signs of expected wear consistent with the age-_x000D_ Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) was a Dutch botanist, chemist, Christian humanist, and physician of European fame and is is often hailed as the "Dutch Hippocrates".
