Goldgulden nd. (1394-1399), Oberwesel (Felke517, Noss314, Fr.-.-) - Obv: St. John standing facing, right hand raised, pastoral staff with dot in left hand, left looking eagle between feet; WERNER VSARCIPS● / Rev: Arms of Trier-Minzenberg in trilobe; +MONETANOVAWEISSELSIS - Gold 3.45 g. - VF/XF
According to the catalogue of Alfred Noss this coin is somewhat (in)famous. At first it was thought that the legend on the reverse had to be read as WEISSENSIS and therefore had to be contributed to the fabled mint of Moselweiss. As time gradually passed on, it became more and more obvious that, due to the very few pieces known of this Goldgulden, the legend had to read with an L as WEISSELSIS. That means this Goldgulden must be contributed to Wesel. In total there are appr. 15 different ways and abbreviations the town of Wesel is described on coins of Kuno and Werner von Falkenstein, but this specific reverse legend is only to be found on this Goldgulden.
Of the highest rarity, only a few specimens known, a premium offering for the discerning collector.
