Spanish-American 4 Real, date off (ca.1730), with rectangular countermark ‘230’ in Arabic digits. In the 18th and first part of the 19th century, various coins have been countermarked by the Sultanate of Sumenep on the isle of Madura to the east of Java. This is one of the earliest countermarks attributed to Sumenep (Ref.: See for discussion ZENO 26587; vd Wis kloppen E 54) - This c/m is only found on Spanish-American pieces of eight Real and its denominations; dates observed are 1729-1732 - VF / Ex Taisei Auction, Febr.1999, lot 1123
