A large section of circular legend, as on previous coin, reached the flan, from XI o’clock. Below the horse letter si / Rev.: Nimbate Śrī holding flywhisk and short ritual cloth. She stands to left in gracefully flexed stance on lotus. Her clinging hip cloth covers thighs but leaves lower legs free. A cord passes along her legs. Traces of a lace of beads on her cap. Verse legend (3) is off but would have read rājādhirājaḥ pṛthivīṃ vijitvā divaṃ jayatyāhṛta-vājimedhaḥ, from XI o’clock, meaning ‘After having conquered the earth, the Overlord of Kings, who has performed the vājimedha, wins heaven’ (Raven 2016:110). Below the horse letter si, considered short for siddham, ‘blessings’ / Rev.: Elegant Śrī holding flywhisk as a royal emblem, and a short, ritual cloth. She stands gracefully to left on lotus. Her hip cloth waves along her ankles. A lace of beads graces her cap. Before her an ornamental standard with pennons and what resembles a śrīvatsa lucky-sign top. In the right field the title aśvamedhaparākrama, ‘With the boldness (of a king worthy of) an aśvamedha’. Small crack on V o’clock (Raven 2010: group SG.06; Raven 2016 and frthcmg: SG/Group 3, Var. 3.2; Kumar 2017/2024: Var. I.A.1, Fr.75) - nice good VF, Aśvamedha coins are not rare but exist in many varieties. Double die-linked to next coin. Battle-axe Type, AV dinara, 7.69 g, 19 mm, specific gravity 15.14. Obv.: Elegant, nimbate king holding battle-axe while resting right hand on hip. Behind him, on his right, attendant with crescent banner, apparently female, which is exceptional for the type, but not for this variety. The king wears tunic with long tails over a dhotī, necklace of plaques, and diadem on cap. Name samudra beneath left arm. Of the circular legend kṛtāntaparaśur-jayatyajitarājajetājitaḥ, from I o’clock, the first words are legible. It praises the king as ‘Wielder of the axe of Kṛtānta, the unconquered conqueror of unconquered kings is victorious’ / Rev.: Nimbate Śrī, with tall fillet and cornucopia. The coin illustrates how the lotus becomes important as her seat also on Gupta coins. A large tamga left and legend kṛtāntaparaśur, ‘He who yields the axe of Kṛtānta (the god of death)’ opposite (Raven 2010: group SG.04; Kumar 2017/2024: Var. II.A.4; Raven frthcmg: SG/Group 3, Variety 3, Fr.72) - good VF, appears to be double-die linked to BM coin but a better strike. Fairly rare and particularly attractive for the reverse image

Name candra beneath left arm and gupta near margin; śrīkumāradevī along left margin. The style emphasizes round shapes, which makes the royal pair look young. He stands with hips swayed to his right. The outfit includes smooth loin cloth, prominent sash, and necklace. Hairdo of curls Circular legend from I o’clock jayati svaguṇair guṇa...mahendrakumāraḥ, ‘Mahendrakumāra, … having an abundance of virtues, conquers through his virtues’, partly legible. Gerald Browne (1993-1994:162-163) suggested jayati svaguṇair guṇarāśir vṛtranihantṛ-mahendrakumāraḥ, comparing Kumāragupta to Indra as killer of the demon Vṛtra.
