Owing to the shortage of coins of small denomination, which had led to great disturbances and troubles, and in order to accommodate the indigenous population, the Batavian Government by a Res. of Nov. 9, 1658, decided to prepare at Batavia copper "Tangen" of the same shape as those on the coast of India, Ceylon, Coromandel, Bengal and Aracan, having at either end a small mark to prevent them from being shortened, and to declare them current at the rate of an "Oortje" (2 Doits). In due course the mint master for the production of these emergency pieces, found the copper at hand so hard that it was impracticable for the purpose and it was therefore decided that further issues should be made from tin. Cheribon, Tin/lead pitis (1.17 g.), VOC CHERIBON. This type of pitjes were cast in accordance of a treaty between the VOC and the three Sultans of Cheribon, dated 8 September 1688. Later when the qualified pitjes-makers (Raksa Negara & Sura di Nata) had passed away, the minting-rights were farmed out to Chinese for 200 Rixdaaalders annually, which amount was not increased in subsequent agreements of 2 April 1715, 29 April 1720, 1 September 1744 and 18 January 1752. Holland - AV ducat 1752, possibly over 1751, oblique milled (Delm 775 / CNM 2.28.54 / KM 12.3), with imitative countermark. This c/m is an imitation of the similar oval shaped c/m of Sumanep (v/d Wis B 15; N. v/d Ch. #177; ZENO 23979) and for the first time noticed in the collection Fonrobert, vol. 3, Australia, Asia and Africa, Berlin 1878 (lot #869, 870 & 871) and attributed to Bandjar(masin). Netscher & v/d Chijs (p. 159) read it “Belandjar”, but must be regarded as NOT authentic and were probably made in the middle of the 19th century to satisfy the collectors demand. Batavia, AR 1 stiver of Zeeland (1.12 g.), dated 1683, Obv. “swimming lion” (the crest of the province) / rev. Inscription: ZEE / LAN / DIA / 1683. On obverse countermark of a small demi-lion to left arising from waves, which was applied according to an announcement on May 16, 1687 that the genuine stivers of Zeeland should be stamped with a small impression of the lion of Zeeland similar to the lion on the obverse.
