4 Reales (date off) (1729-1732) with sq. or rectangular countermark ‘Sumenep’ in Malay-Arabic (Ref.: cf. Millies 124; Netch vd Ch. 176a). In the 18th and first part of the 19th century, various coins have been countermarked by the Sultanate of Sumenep on the isle of Madura to the east of Java. This is the earliest countermark attributed to Sumenep and is only found on Spanish-American pieces of eight Real and its half - VF
