Double Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-A, Paris mint (KM471, Gad.345, Dupl.1637, Fr.458) - Obv: Young laureate bust right / Rev: Crowned monogram of 2 cursive L's within palm wreath - Gold, 27.7 mm, 12.75 g. - traces of mounting, VF, very rare, the largest denomination to feature this famed design, nicknamed the "Mirliton" after the French eunuch flute, supposedly a reference to a popular song of the period that ridiculed Louis' finance minister, Cardinal Dubois. One of just two dates for which the type is known, virtually all of the mintage of these Double Louis was recovered from the wreckage of the Le Chameau wreck off the coast of Port Nova Island, Nova Scotia
