Lot 616
Provincial Gulden 1794 West-Friesland with a countermark in the shape of a pointed oval with a flower design, attributed to Sumanep. The pointed oval type c/m is mainly applied on Rupee-seize coins, viz.: silver rupees (mainly Java rupees), Dutch ‘Generaliteits’-guldens, Quarter Pagoda of British India (1807) and also found on a Spanish 4 Real 1793. According to the information received by Netscher and Van der Chijs, the Sultan Paku Nata Ningrit (1812-1854) installed in 1818/19 a commission for countermarking silver money to suppress the many counterfeit coins in circulation. Subsequently silver money were countermarked with a flower. As the pointed oval type c/m is mainly observed on coins from the second half of the 18th century and begin 19th century it is asumed that this countermark is applied in 1819/19 and later. About 1825 the at Sumanep countermarking ceased. Host coin and c/m VF+ - ex-Berkman - collectie Coenen
