Rupee 9.82 g., Colombo, 1787. Struck by resolution of 12 May 1787. Owing to the high price of silver it was decided to reduce the weight of the Rupees and to strike a small quantity for internal use. As there was no assayer attached to the mint at Colombo they were tested by the sworn assayer and given the small hall-mark on the edge of a mango tree with a dove (columbus) on it, between K -K ("Kleine Keur"). These were really emergency coins of which reportedly 20.000 were struck. AR abbassi of 5 shahi (9.19 g.) of Persia i.n.o. Shah Abbas II, AD1642-66 Host coin mint: off, AH1072 (AD1661/62). Countermarked at Galle? with the Company’s monogram VOC/G. Despite that no countermarks of VOC/G of Galle are reported, this coin shows a clear G over the VOC-monogram. It may be either an error for VOC/C(olombo) or (more likely) a unreported trial for a VOC/G(alle) countermark applied during the early 1660’s at Galle. R4 Host coin aVF with flat parts, c/m VF. The initial above the VOC-monogram seems an ‘I’, but differs from the usual Jaffna countermark. Perhaps an unreported Jaffna c/m, bur more likely a die-defect of the c/m punch. Ceylon, AR larin. The larin, also known as “koku ridi” was in use in Kandy from 17th to early part of the 19th century were made by private parties, five of which went to a piece-of-eight, or a Spanish Dollar. The larin was frequently used by the VOC as silver currency and shortage of it caused monetairy problems and the need to produce equivalents in copper (Scho. 1288 & 1295). Lot of 4 different specimen of Ceylon provenance. Average VF.

AE VI stivers or ½ larin (66.47 g.; 126 x 15.84 x 6.30 mm). Colombo, ND (c. 1660-1720). The 6 stiver pieces were made as emergency coins from Japanese copper bars to compensate for the silver larins which were hoarded by the local people and caused for a temporary shortage of silver. The rate of the silver larin, at that time, was 12 stivers and the VI stivers therefore circulated for a ½ silver larin. The Japanese copper bars were struck on each end with the value VI / St within a leafy wreath. Neither lenght (which vary from aprox. 98 to 127 mm.) nor weight is constant. These emergency VI stivers are extremely rare and rarely offered for sale. XF. Ref.: Scho. 1288; Passon 53.4
